Another staple of farm life is a hearty breakfast. At least it was on my grandparents' farm where I spent my summers. The dishes depicted in this painting belonged to both sets of grandparents. My favorite pieces are the knife and fork. My farm grandfather bought a set for each of his eleven grandchildren at a general store somewhere in Angelus county, S.C. I still have mine, minus the spoon. What you don't see in this painting are the biscuits my grandmother used to make. Made with buttermilk and lard, they were heartstoppingly divine.
