On January 15th,1797, John Hetherington stirred a riot in the streets of London and earned himself a £500 fine. Why? Because--for the first time ever--he wore something he is credited with inventing: the top hat! According to newspaper accounts, women fainted, children screamed, dogs ran away in terror. One child is said to have been trodden on by the panicked crowd. Hetherington was hauled into court for wearing "a tall structure having a shining luster calculated to frighten timid people." Caution: this story may or may not be true. What is true is how smashing Kato the cat looks in his top hat.
